There are places I remember...

There are places in time and space when a person stops and makes a point to pay attention to her surroundings and try to burn the moment with the accompanying emotions into her memory for all time because, good or bad, there is a lesson to be learned by them and committing them to memory will be absolutely necessary for survival in the future... because those moments of enlightenment will pass, and one has to have something to sustain sanity in between...

These bookmarks are things like

a split second of silence during church when you've had the Truth revealed

learning from someone else's mistake

sitting alone at the table in a restaurant while your date is in the restroom and knowing something good is starting

having a ring slipped on your finger during your wedding

realizing you made a mistake you could have avoided if you'd bothered to learn from someone else's

holding your child, not for the first time, but for the first time it doesn't seem like an alien anymore

seeing that child do the right thing even though he doesn't know you're watching

knowing something is over for good

having a really, I mean really, good meal

having it proven to you that you can't die from loneliness

really teaching something for the first time

realizing for the first time that not everyone--and, in fact, hardly anyone anymore-- wants to be taught

finding a like mind

standing in front of something you thought you'd only ever see in books

leaving a place for the last time

seeing a perfect sunset behind your boyfriend as he gets down on one knee

sharing a fit of laughter that proves honest and true friendship can and does exist

Maybe you live a charmed life and relish every moment. Congratulations. I'm afraid I live more in a state of amnesia as to why I'm here, and I keep this little catalog to remind me every once in a while. Even so, recalling things that make you know better doesn't necessarily make you do better. When I figure that one out, I'll let you know.
